About the College of Computing
The College of Computing started in 2006 to provide a specialised environment for Year 13 students to focus on computers and their wide range of uses. Intended as a pathway to tertiary education the College of Computing is built around the application of the design process on computer based projects. Students gain a range of fundamental skills that they apply throughout the year and can use as a basis for further study.
Located on the Hagley Community College campus in the X Block the College of Computing operates as a "school within a school" providing the students with their own space and access to the computers as well as the wider facilities offered by the Community College.
The Hagley College of Computing features a high degree of integration between computing topics. Instead of being taught everything from one area of the course before moving onto the next topic, students are taught fundamental skills early in the year and are later provided with practical projects to apply those skills within. These projects will draw on a number of skill areas which give students the opportunity to apply their skills in a real life environment. In the fourth term students are then able to choose an area to focus on for their individual project.
Web Site
This web site forms a central part of the College of Computing and is a main communication point. All of our project briefs are available here for students to read as they need to along with related resources.
Open Source
The Hagley College of Computing primarily uses open source software to teach relevant skills. There is often a bit of a learning curve for students (and often parents) so we have put together a brief description of how and why we've set things up this way.
