Robotic Sumo Wrestling Competition Results

Date:

The robots have been built, programmed and battled it out.

The matches quickly regressed with all robots designed for power and strength. The crowd went wild in the last minutes of technical desicions and knockout rounds and an overall winner was decided.

The Royal Rumble resulted in a number of restarts and a clear winner in Cherup. B08 took out the People's Choice award with an overwhelming 7 votes.

The full results are up.

Virtual Pet 08

Date:
19 Jun 2008

The students are currently working through development of Virtual Pets for Outside The Square. This year we are seeing a great range of ideas, graphic design and programming skills.

The students were required to organise an initial meeting with staff from Outside The Square, document and cost the project, provide key milestones, report progress and get feedback. This usually takes some time for them to get used to but this year our students seem to have picked it up quickly.

So far it is looking positive for delivery of final solutions to the customer.

Changes to the Course

Date:
13 Jun 2008

The College of Computing is going through a bit of a rework at the moment. We want our students to be able to choose areas of interest and work on projects they have a passion for. We also want them learning solid skills and working with students from other disciplines as well as clients from outside the school.

If you are looking at joining us in 2009 we think you are in for a treat. Stay tuned and if you are thinking about enrolling do not be a stranger. Get in touch and we will keep you up to date.

NZ Open Source Awards 2008

Date:
10 Jun 2008

The NZ Open Source Awards are now accepting nominations and the College of Computing has thrown its hat into the ring once more. Our use of open source has extended beyond the year 13 course and we now have Year 10, Level 1 and Level 2 all using Ubuntu, designing using open source tools and for the odd open source project. Students can choose their tools as required by the projects and take more control over their work environment.

Events like this help us see we are part of something positive and valuable and we would like to take this opportunity to thank the organisers and sponsors for providing this excellent showcase of New Zealand talent.
