Following project work on usability and user testing the College of Computing students have visited the Information Design Centre New Zealand to see a real usability lab in action. This was a great opportunity for them to see the practical application of user testing and learn about the wider uses for testing beyond computers.

Greg Comfort of IDCNZ introduced the students to the type of work they do and the sort of clients they work with running through the approach taken and some excellent stories about clients expectations. The students were then given a quick tour of the three rooms (testing, control and meeting/briefing) and had the opportunity to look at the equipment used in testing and discuss how it differed from the paper-based testing done in class. The students were split up into groups to complete a user test on the Hagley Community College web site using a prepared script. One student was the user, a second the tester and the other split into two further groups: half in the control room and half in the meeting room (observing on a large plasma screen). During the testing the students recorded key moments and managed the cameras. Following the test everyone entered the meeting room for a discussion about the test, the process and the results. A second test was then completed on the College of Computing web site followed by a discussion about the issues discovered and how they could be solved. (Note: a number of the solutions have been implemented). We wish to thank the Information Design Centre New Zealand for allowing us to visit and take over their premises for the afternoon and in particular would like to thank Greg for his time and effort.
