Desktop Publishing and Word Processing

Research and present the impact of electronic publishing has had on our society

Assessment Details

This project provides evidence for the following standards:

# Level Credit Title
AS90045 1 6 Develop a technological solution to address a given brief
AS90050 1 4 Present a technological solution that addresses the requirements of a brief
AS90049 1 4 Demonstrate understanding of technological knowledge
AS90051 1 4 Describe the interactions between a technological innovation and society

Project Overview:

The ability to publish content electronically has changed the way we share our ideas and knowledge. The development of desktop publishing and the world wide web have allowed individuals to communicate freely with each other relatively inexpensively and at a level that is new to our society.

We are going to explore how this increased level of individual communication and ability to publish content has changed the way we access information, our expectations of that information and if there has been an impact on our lifestyles.

You are being asked to research electronic publishing and work towards answering three key questions about the impact of electronic publishing. You will then present your research and conclusions in a printed booklet that can be used as a resource in other courses.

Specifications

The following elements must be present in your design:

  • Research that helps you explore the following questions:
    1. how has electronic desktop publishing affected our society? (think – advertising, access to printed material, inexpensive publishing)
    2. how has electronic publishing in general affected our society?
    3. what expectations have shaped the way we publish (what would you do if you didn't have a computer to print or publish?)
  • final content written and formatted using a word processor
  • final presentation of the content using a destop publisher
  • final images in suitable print format (.tif, .eps) and at a resolution suitable for print (>150dpi)
  • the final document will be in A5 (210 x 148.5) in size
  • the final booklet must have a front cover, table of contents and a bibliography (referencing work used in your research)

Requirements:

Design Process

You are expected to demonstrate that you have worked through the design process to produce your final solution.

We expect to see:

  • brief documentation
  • concept sketches exploring ideas for the visual layout of your booklet
  • relevant research
  • project management evidence (timesheet, planning, milestones etc)
  • ongoing evaluation of your ideas
  • a final evaluation of your solution
Research

You are free to research any aspect of electronic publishing and the impact it has had on society but your final content (ie. the content you put into your booklet) must be your own work.

All research must be referenced if used in your final content so record where you found information as you go.

Booklet

Each booklet needs to include a simple front cover and have explored all three questions. You are free to layout your booklet as you see fit as long as it is physically no larger than A5

Achievement Requirements

To achieve in this project you will be required to complete the following tasks:

  • Produce a brief using this project outline as a base
  • Produce a final solution that meets all the requirements of your brief
  • Produce a plan that outlines costs (time) and milestones that allow you to complete the project on time
  • Manage the project and your time using computer-based tools
  • Demonstrate an ongoing ability to use a desktop publishing tool and word processor and identify the different uses of each
